As the world celebrates International Nurses Day, it is important to recognize the critical role that the health sector plays in ensuring the well-being of communities.
One way to support this sector is through the adoption of renewable energy, particularly solar energy.
Solar energy has the potential to revolutionize the health sector by improving access to reliable and sustainable power, which is essential for the provision of quality healthcare services.
In many parts of the world, the health sector faces significant challenges due to a lack of access to reliable electricity. This can have direct consequences, particularly in emergencies where access to power is critical.
With solar energy, health facilities can access reliable and affordable power, reducing their reliance on diesel generators and other fossil fuel-based sources. This can improve the quality of healthcare services and save lives in emergencies.
Tanzania is a country that faces significant challenges in the health sector due to a lack of access to reliable electricity. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), only 32% of health facilities have access to reliable electricity, with many relying on diesel generators that are expensive to run and maintain.
However, the adoption of solar energy in the health sector in Tanzania has shown promising results in improving access to quality healthcare services.
A classic example is the Mwandiga Health Center in Kigoma, which previously relied on a diesel generator for power, now has access to reliable electricity, through Solar Energy.
This has enabled the health centre to operate medical equipment, provide lighting for night-time deliveries, and refrigerate vaccines, among other things. The project has also reduced the cost of power for health facilities, enabling them to allocate resources to other critical areas.
Solar energy can improve access to quality healthcare services, reduce operating costs, and contribute to sustainable development goals, especially SDG 7.
Amshaamsha Foundation has become at the forefront of supporting sustainable development goals number 7 and 3 by creating awareness in society on the use of solar energy that can help to reduce the carbon footprint of healthcare facilities, which is important for sustainable development.
“This can help to mitigate the impact of climate change on health outcomes and support the global transition to clean energy by providing a reliable power supply ”, Says Yvonnie Matui Project Development Specialist at Amshaamsha Foundation (AAF)
Finally, the adoption of solar energy can help promote sustainable development and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The SDGs aim to improve access to healthcare services, reduce poverty, and promote sustainable energy, among other objectives. By adopting solar energy, the health sector can contribute to the achievement of these goals, creating a healthier and more sustainable future for all.
In conclusion, The adoption of solar energy in the health sector in Tanzania and other developing countries can have significant benefits for the well-being of communities, creating a healthier and more sustainable future for all.
