Reaping big from community engagement in Tanzania for lasting impact

One of the key strengths of the Amshaamsha Foundation lies in its emphasis on community engagement. AAF understands that sustainable development cannot be achieved in isolation.

Therefore, we actively involve local communities, encouraging participation and collaboration.

Through educational programs, awareness campaigns, and skill-building initiatives, AAF empowers individuals to become ambassadors of change within their communities.

Renewable energy has the potential to transform communities by providing access to clean, affordable, and reliable energy. One of the groups that can benefit the most from renewable energy is local communities.

To comply with the government’s strategies, Amshaamsha Foundation has been among the stakeholders pushing the wheel by providing education and encouraging the use of clean and safe energy for local women entrepreneurs and the whole community at large.

‘Business contributes to climate change’

The Program Development Specialist of Amshaamsha Foundation, Yvonnie Matui, says many businesses may contribute to climate change if they do not use clean energy.

“Climate change is one of the main challenges currently facing the world, to deal with the effects of these changes including drought, floods and temperature increase, environmental experts recommend the use of clean and safe energy for cooking and lighting,” Matui says.

She says education about clean and safe energy is needed because it is a sustainable solution to climate change while asking stakeholders to join forces to move the agenda forward.

To foster thriving communities, it is essential that we collectively embrace responsibility for the future.

As a collective of professionals within our respective communities, we have a steadfast commitment to cultivating an inclusive culture among ourselves, while actively involving and empowering local communities to co-create sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions.

AAF and Kinzudi local government officials have forged a long-standing collaboration to study the adoption challenges of clean energy in business and domestic sectors.

Responding to community needs

The goal was to see how aware the citizens understand clean energy like solar power, its usage and installation so that  AAF can initiate development projects to encourage the use of safe energy for home and business use by women entrepreneurs.

“We decided to do this because, in the beginning, we started by distributing lights on the day to celebrate International Women’s Day, but we have realised that there is a greater need for education on the correct use of safe energy and its equipment, so we had to go into the streets to find out exactly what the citizens themselves need so that we can come up with a development strategy,” Matui says

After the study, the majority of the respondents, more than half or 50%, were aware of renewable energy, particularly solar energy. They were able to mention the main use of solar energy is lightning, charging phones, and also can be used as radio.

“The quick scan showed that most SMEs around Kinzudi LGAs offices use lights that

are charged by a car battery, which costs Tshs 1,500 per day which is equal to Tshs 45,000 per month, while others were using Sun King lights as a loan under the condition of contributing Tshs 800 per day which is equal to 288,000 per year. Thus, the AAF lights are reliable, effective, and cost-effective,” Yvonnie said.

There is a need for conducting time-to-time awareness training for youth and women

SMEs to create awareness relating to the uses of solar power.

Long commitment, lasting impact

In solving the prevailing impact of climate change, we focus on a wide range of areas including renewable energy and climate action. By championing these causes, AAF strives to create a harmonious balance between human progress and the preservation of our planet’s delicate ecosystem.

In the realm of renewable energy, AAF has spearheaded projects promoting clean and sustainable power sources.

From solar installations to innovative energy-efficient solutions, we are driving the transition towards a greener and more sustainable future.

Climate action is a central pillar of the Amshaamsha Foundation’s endeavours. We actively promote awareness about climate change and advocate for policies that mitigate its effects.

Through collaborations with governmental bodies, NGOs, and grassroots organisations, AAF is driving systemic change to combat climate change globally.

We emphasize women, youths, and special groups’ engagement, to address issues of clean cooking, and the productive use of energy in our economic activities, especially sustainable agriculture which is the backbone of most African communities.

Once again, welcome to Amshaamsha Foundation, a breath of fresh air, driven by commitment, partnership and passion for the earth we live in and love.

 Together we can go FAR!
